Among more than 17.000 islands, there are 5 names known as Indonesia largest islands. Those islands are, based on the land area within Indonesia territory
- Kalimantan – 539,640 square kilometers
- Sumatera – 443,066 square kilometers
- Papua – 421,981 square kilometers
- Sulawesi – 180,681 square kilometers
- Java – 138,794 square kilometers
Papua Island is actually the biggest one with total land area 785,753 square kilometers. It is bigger than Sumatera Island. However, parts of Papua Island is shared with New Guinea.
The same also apply with Kalimantan. The total area of Kalimantan (Borneo) Island is 748,168 square kilometers which is shared with Malaysia (Sabah and Serwak) and also Bruinei Dar Es Salam.
Those five Indonesia largest Islands are inhabited by more than 80% of Indonesia population.
Java becomes the number one on the most crowded island with more than 124 millions of people living on its land. Sumatera takes the next position with 46 millions. Followed by Kalimantan, Sulawesi and Papua.
Besides, the most crowded Island, Java is also the most developed island in Indonesia. Jakarta, The Indonesia’s Capital is located in western side of Java. Some big cities such as Surabaya, Bandung, Semarang are also located on the island.
